Missy Armstrong, a single mother of two has made her best friend a very special promise!
Last Year, Armstrong’s best friend, Sara Hankins was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral sclerosis (ALS); a debilitating neurodegenerative disease with no cure. Since then, Hankins biggest concern was what would happen to her four children once she was no longer here to provide for them.
“The thought of where they would go was killing her more than the ALS was,” said Armstrong. “It consumed her everyday thoughts, because none of her family members were able to take in all four kids together.
“I thought, yeah, I can do this,” Said Armstrong who has two children of her own. “I love them and I’ve known them their whole lives – I make a decent living – I have the support of her family.”
This is when her longtime friend stepped up and promised to adopt her four children. Armstrong is actually in the process to legally adopt three of Hankins’ children. Hankins’ fourth child is 18 year old, so an adoption is not necessary; however Armstrong plans to take care of him as well.
With tons of support from Hankins’ family and several generous donors on GoFundMe, Armstrong is planning to purchase a five bedroom house for her new family of seven.
Armstrong and Hankins first met in 1999 at hairdressing school and have been best friends ever since.
“The very first day of school, my car broke down and I had to walk to school,” says Armstrong. “I planned on walking back because it wasn’t far, but I looked over at Sara and asked if I could get a ride for whatever reason! When she dropped me off, she was like ‘I’ll pick you up in the morning!’ And that’s the kind of person she was”.
“From then on we became inseparable.”
There is no one more suited to take care of Hankins’ children as Armstrong had known them their entire lives. Their children are have grown up like family!
