Mother of four, Cara Brookins found herself in need of a new home after refusing to put up with a domestic violence situation that threatened her wellbeing. After leaving the traumatizing situation with little money, and in desperate need of a new home; she decided to do something truly amazing.
Brookings wanted to give her children a fresh start in a new home, but had limited funds.
“Things can get a little expensive when you are escaping an abusive relationship and have four children,” Brookins explained.
Brookins’ initial intention was to buy a home, but they were either too expensive or just too small. So, Cara did what we all do when we want to figure something out; she turned to YouTube.
Brookins, along with her four children, built a home from the ground up with nothing more than a small bank loan and YouTube tutorial videos.
Her family was extremely skeptical at first, but went along with the plan because of Cara’s determination. The family watched YouTube tutorial on everything from laying foundation, electrical work, siding, and pluming. Slowly but surely the family worked together to build each each room and before they knew it, their home was starting to take shape.
With “no experience nailing together anything bigger than a bookshelf” Brookins and her kids “poured concrete, framed the walls and laid bricks” for their two storey, five bedroom 3,500 square foot dream home.
According to Brookins, the construction project helped her children get over the trauma her previous relationship caused. “It was the first time they had felt any sort of power, any sort of control over their lives. And they knew how much they needed it.”
When done, the family had more than just a place to live, they had a new sense of self.
Brookins oldest child hope says “I’ve learned that I can do anything.”
Not only does the family have a new home, but they have learned some valuable lessons
