Cindy Chafian is celebrating her 20th wedding anniversary later this month, but instead of receiving a traditional store bought gift, her husband Scott is giving her one of his kidneys.
Cindy suffers from polycystic kidney disease, a hereditary disease that runs in her family. She has undergone multiple surgeries and being on dialysis for about two years, however her condition has gotten increasingly worse.
The situation has been extremely difficult for her husband Scott to watch.
“It’s devastating, it was just a feeling of helplessness,” said Scott.
Scott had offered to donate his kidney to Cindy six years ago, but she declined. Cindy didn’t want to take it from him; but as her health got progressively worse Cindy realized she needed to accept the offer.
“I hit kind of rock bottom, and I looked at him and I said okay, I’m ready,” Cindy told WTKR.
“To know that he’s kind of giving me that ability is even more of an amazing gift. He powers me in so many ways … he is literally going to give me life. So it’s an amazing gift,” said Cindy.
The transplant surgery is scheduled for January 24 which is one day before their 20th anniversary.
“He called me and he told me that everything was a go. He gave me a date and that was the first time I allowed myself any emotion and I actually cried,” she said.
Every night for the past two years a peritoneal dialysis machine has done what her husband’s kidney soon will; allow Cindy to survive.
Both Cindy and Scott will be unable to work for several months after the surgery, so their friends and family are raising money to help them out. They’ve even setup a GoFundMe account to cover additional expenses they expect to incur while they recover.
