Halima Aden has become the first to compete in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant while fully clothed.
19 year old Aden made history by being the first Muslim woman to wear a hijab and full body burkini during the 2016 Miss Minnesota USA pageant in Burnsville.
Although Aden didn’t win the competition, she considers finishing in the top 15 a victory for all Muslim women.
“This is a big win for us,” she told KARE news. “I’m the first to do this, and I’m hoping to see more Muslim women wearing burkinis, being celebrated.”
The 19 year old made the decision to compete in traditional Muslim clothing to inspire other women to be themselves
“For a really long time I thought being different was a negative thing. But as I grew older, I started to realize we are all born to stand out, nobody is born to blend in,” Aden said. “How boring would this world be if everyone was the same?”
Aden’s message has already spread throughout the internet and I’m sure she’s inspiring a generation of woman to be proud to be who they are.
